By now, you may have heard of Credit Karma – a site that claims to give you your credit score for FREE.

The site simply asks people to sign up (which requires confirming identity so that your credit history can be pulled) and then they will receive access to their free credit score, as well as information that can be found on their credit report.

Does it all sound too good to be true?

Is Credit Karma Legit? A Look at Privacy

Now, I know some of you are probably freaking out at the thought of entering some of your very private data onto the internet. I totally get it! I was completely apprehensive about it at first, but I decided to go ahead and give it a try since I would rather take advantage of a potentially fantastic free service rather than paying to get my credit score from some other place that wants to rip me off.

Sorry, rant over.

Upon enrollment, I was taken to my main homepage where I got to instantaneously see my free credit score and various data that was associated with my report (i.e. length of credit history, number of accounts I have, etc.).

Impressive.

I was surprised to see all the tools and features that Credit Karma offered. I started snooping around to make sure all my data was going to stay private and I have to say that I was quite impressed with how tight of a ship these people were running. The site was secure and everything seemed to be as it should be in order to give my private information, well, private.

Follow Up a Few Years Later…

As the time went on, I became more and more comfortable with the service. I have NEVER had an issue with getting any of my information stolen and I’ve always received notification when anything was getting updated! Definitely a positive mark in my book.

So What About the Score Itself? Is it Accurate?

First of all, just let me say that I’m not the expert on how a credit score gets formulated. Let’s just be honest… that whole process is confusing and it seems like there is no one right formula to make it all make sense!

Now that I’ve gotten that little disclaimer out of the way, let’s review Credit Karma’s score features.

Recently, the site received a nice update that now allows members to see scores for both TransUnion and Equifax. Whenever I’ve had my credit pulled in the past, I’ve actually found these numbers to be pretty close to what my actual score was, so that’s a huge plus!

I would venture out to guess that many other users have had similar experiences because the site is growing and more and more people are realizing what a great service this is to have for FREE.

Is Joining Worth It?

In my honest opinion, I truly think it is. Here’s why…

  • Credit Karma provides you with a free resource to help you understand your credit better (and we all know that is super important since you may need to take out a mortgage or auto loan one day)
  • You’ll have access to weekly updates of your score from both Experian and TransUnion
  • You can opt to have free credit report monitoring which allows you to gain more insight into where you are doing well and where you may need to improve your money management

So is Credit Karma legit? Absolutely!!!

If you’re a member or are thinking about joining, would you share some of your experiences in the comments below? I’d love to hear from you!
