Find a Tutor

Throughout your education, you have probably been self-sufficient, for the most part. But there were likely at least a few times when you met with a friend for a review session or joined a study group. There are benefits to working alone to further your skill sets. And there are benefits from working with others to help one another better understand the content.

There is also another option you may or may not have considered in the past. Hiring a tutor is a great way to fine-tune your learning objectives while making sure you are on track to reach your goals. Some content and testing structures are much different than others. It can help to work with a tutor to learn the best methodologies and practices to help ensure successful results on an upcoming exam.

Protect Your Mental Health

When you are pursuing your goals, you might go all out and neglect the important things in life. After all, as soon as you complete your education and matriculate, you can begin living your best life in the career field of your dreams. That being said, it is important to focus on the here and now and enjoy the world around you, even as you work towards another degree.

All of this is sound advice. Yet it is much easier said than done. It is important to maintain a steady focus on your mental health during this stage in your studies. You are likely very busy with little time to do much beyond your schoolwork and work. But you still need to take care of yourself. Take the time to sit for a few minutes each day, at a time that works best for you. Reset your mind through thoughtful and quiet meditation, reduce your stressors by writing them down in a journal, and make an appointment to see a licensed mental health provider to help you talk through your thoughts and concerns.

Take Care of Your Physical Health

Your physical health is related to your mental health, and is just as important. If you are overworking yourself and constantly in a state of exhaustion, it is time to take action. Focus on better scheduling practices so your body can get what it needs.

Set alarms throughout the day to remind yourself to drink water, make and eat healthy meals, and go to bed at a reasonable time. Exercise is necessary, as well. Even if you do not have enough time for a full workout session, you can go for a 10-minute walk each day. Of course, you already know that these things are essential to a healthy body, but they often go by the wayside when you are busy.

Talk with Your Supervisor

Your supervisor is both a gatekeeper and a potential lifeline. They are the person who has a direct eye on you and is a witness to your work ethic and drive. If you need to adjust your work schedule to accommodate an upcoming test or to take on the work involved in a difficult class, it is time to open the lines of communication with your supervisor. Discuss your needs, intentions for the position, and suggest a possible outcome. Instead of asking for time off or an adjusted schedule, be clear about what you are requesting.

Request a sit-down meeting with your supervisor and make a formal request for a specific schedule. Discuss what you can do, the days and hours you are able to work, and include a timeline for this new schedule, if possible. Be open to negotiation and know what you can and cannot bear at work so you can successfully continue your education. If your current job is unrelated to your future career endeavours and is only a means to a financial end, you might need to begin looking elsewhere. However, if your current job and the company align with your career goals, they may be more likely to work with your scheduling requests, especially since you might stay on with the company.

Earning your four-year degree is something to be proud of, but going beyond that is both an exciting pursuit and a labor of love. It takes hard work to achieve your goals. As you transition from one stage of life to the next, it is important to remember to find the resources you need to succeed.
