The Pros & Cons Of Long Distance Dating

You’ve been talking to someone for a while, maybe you met them online or you just know them through a friend, and things seem to be going great. In fact, they’re so great that you’re thinking about taking things to the next level and becoming official. There’s just one thing holding you back; they live in a different country.

Does long distance dating work, or will your relationship be destined to fail? This is a question that worries you all the time. So, to help you make more sense out of the situation, here are the pros and cons of a long-distance relationship:

Pro: A deeper connection

Long-distance relationships have the potential to be amazing and full of love. If anything, you form a deeper bond with someone when they’re not with you 24/7. If the two of you can be in different countries and still be in love, then it shows you’ve got something special. You don’t take each other for granted, which a lot of couples sadly do when they live in the same place.

Con: Might go ages without seeing one another

The obvious downside is that you can’t see your partner all the time. You can’t just hop in your car and pay them a visit, you need to plan an entire trip and book flights, etc. It’s a lot of effort, and some people can’t handle it.

Pro: More travel opportunities

Funnily enough, a long-distance relationship gives you more opportunities to travel! You can plan holidays together where you meet in the middle. Or, just going over to where your partner lives can be a trip in itself. You’ll definitely rack up the air miles with a long-distance lover, that’s for sure. If you want to get out and explore more of the world, then this type of relationship may suit you perfectly.

Con: Potential legal technicalities

Let’s say things go amazing between you and your new lover. So much so that you want to get married or move in with one another. They plan to come over here, but you run into a technical hitch – immigration law. Your partner may need to apply for a green card before coming here, or they could be denied citizenship altogether. As a result, you end up in talks with a family immigration law firm to try and resolve the situation. Hopefully, things work out, and you can live happily ever after. But, if your loved one is denied entry to the country – for whatever reason – then it throws a spanner in the works. You may have to leave and go to them instead, which puts your whole life plan in jeopardy.

Obviously, there are advantages and disadvantages when dating someone from another country. For me, this relationship either works, or it doesn’t. If the two of you are in love, then you will have no problems. Distance will make the heart grow fonder, and there will come a time when you can be together forever. But, if you don’t think you can handle all the time apart – and the effort involved – then it’s best to nip it in the bud before it begins. Otherwise, it’ll just lead to heartbreak.
